supercup2013-2

The Annual Super Cup match between Varsity and Alumni took place this past Sunday at Keith Harris Stadium. The Alumni having taken the cup the past two years were looking to make it three in a row! The match kicked off at a torrid pace with both Alumni and Varsity committed to tackles and not holding anything back. Coach Mackie fielded a strong Varsity side and much of the play was in the alumni half for the first ten minutes. Varsity got on the board first with a bit of a gaffer goal as defender Stefano Vieira played a tough header back to keeper Ian Rosso. The Varsity striker stole the ball off of Rosso and slotted the ball home to take the lead at 1-0. Alumni made a few tactical changes, moving Tim Khaemba into a central midfield role and this really changed the momentum in favour of the alumni. After a few great opportunities to score, the alumni finally tied up the match on a wonderful run and cross from Khaemba. “Timbo” took the ball, beat 4-5 varsity players, and crossed in to Justin Campos who slotted in calmly to tie the match at one a piece. The match remained at a dead lock with both squads creating numerous opportunities but either squad failed to take the lead. With the game hanging in the balance, keeper Rosso made a stand out save, blocking the varsity striker on a clear break away to keep the match tied at one a piece. The game would have to be decided by penalties and the alumni maturity and experience shone through with a 3-1 penalty victory! (Alumni scored on all three shots with Varsity missing 3 of 4 shots). PK goals were scored by Tim Khaemba, Alex Zaslavsky, and Justin Campos. Keeper Rosso made three saves in the shootout to earn the Super Cup Alumni MVP. Match MVP for the Varsity was 2nd year starter Mintcho Mintchev.

Following the match both Alumni and Varsity gathered for Pizza and brown pops and shared tales of past Ravens glory! Thanks again to all those that attended and helped make this another successful victory for the good guys!
