Brian Burns  (Coach/Builder – 1981)

Brian Burns was involved in Carleton Soccer well before varsity status was re-instated by the university in 1982. He and Glenn Shirtliffe coached, managed, and helped form the very successful 1981 Carleton University Club team that gave birth to modern day Carleton Ravens Men’s Soccer. Brian is considered one of the pioneers of modern day Carleton Soccer.

Mike Lanos  (Player – 1983-1986)  Forward

Mike Lanos was one of the first true “stars” of men’s soccer at Carleton University. He led the team to the Ontario championship and ultimately the CIAU (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) national final in 1984. Lanos was a selfless player who excelled in all four years he played, was awarded numerous individual honours, (including All-Canadian and Athlete of the Year) and would go on to help found the alumni chapter (CSAA) in 1992-3. Each year, the Mike Lanos Award is presented to the current varsity player who best exemplifies the spirit of Mike’s qualities – leadership, selflessness, and hard work. Mike was inducted into the Carleton University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2016.

Michael Zaborski   (Player – 1992-1996) Defender

Mike “Zab” Zaborski was perhaps Carleton Soccer’s first Croatian sensation. He played under head coach Sandy Mackie for 5 years (captain for 3) and was recognized as an OUA all-star 4 of his 5 years as a player. He captained the Ravens’ first undefeated regular season in 1996.  Mike was primarily a sweeper with skill and a strong physical presence, but his main asset was leadership and commitment. He is among the all-time career leaders in games played as a Raven. Mike is an architect by profession and now lives in New York City with his family.

Stephen Ball (Player – 1986, 1989, 1992-1995) Goalkeeper

Stephen “Stevie” Ball began a long career as a Raven in 1986 on a team of legendary players. He has the distinction of playing for 3 different coaches at Carleton starting with Bill Thomson, Ian Martin, and finally Sandy Mackie. Stevie was co-captain with Mike Zaborski for two years and also an assistant coach for several years under Mackie. He is third all-time in Wins for a Raven goalkeeper. He also helped form the Carleton Soccer Alumni Association in the early 90’s along with Mike Lanos, Claudio Mirella and Marty Lauter.
