Friday September 26th – Informal Stevie Ball Dinner:
We had 18 alumni out for dinner on Friday, September 26th to kick off the alumni weekend, welcome back Stevie Ball, and retell old Carleton stories. The food was fantastic and we wanted to thank Franz Hoefler for catering the dinner. Will Murray was the gracious host offering all amenities of his fine house to alumni – with the exception of the mystery rooms with the words “No!”
Thanks to Declan Bonnar for the speech and it was great to see all of the younger generation of alumni join afterwards: Pano, Mitchev, Stefano, Joey Kewin, Marc-Anthony, Ben Makuch, etc
Saturday September 27th:
Tailgate:
The tailgate was great so thanks to everyone who made it out and helped cook, clean-up, etc.
Alumni Dinner:
Always a special time to reflect and share stories from the playing days. Thank you to the Braunsie family for all of their efforts in getting the room organised for the event and providing us access to the Church and venue. We also wanted to thank Franz Hoefler and his catering team for once again preparing a great meal!
Stevie Ball – Keynote Address:
Thanks to Stevie for taking the time and effort to share such an epic speech. Stevie Ball has been an instrumental member of the Carleton Soccer Alumni Association and took over the reins from Mike Lanos as CSAA president and stayed in that role for about 10 years. During that time the CSAA grew substantially, hosting one of the most prestigious Alumni Indoor Tournaments each year, the annual Alumni golf tournament, along with the alumni weekend and dinner. We had a CSAA website with the legendary banter feed that was twitter before its time! Stevie also went on to be the Carleton Ravens Assistant Coach. While in the city he was always actively involved in the CSAA and went on to hire many Varsity players through various marketing projects in the city. After being away for so many years it is a pleasure to have Stevie back in the city and we encourage any Varsity players or young alumni to make his acquaintance. Welcome back Stevie and thank you for all that you have done for the program over the years and we will be stronger with your presence back in the city.
Mike Lanos Award:
The “Mike Lanos” award is named for the first CSAA president and founder of the Alumni Association. Mike Lanos was also a leading striker for the Ravens and held the record for most goals by a Raven for many years. The Mike Lanos award is given to the Varsity player who best exhibits and embodies the standards and traditions upheld by Carleton University Men’s Soccer – hard work, tenacity, leadership, commitment to the team and is someone who is keen to go above and beyond duty and shows the heart and dedication that not only lead to success on the pitch but are also traits to make them strong members of the alumni come graduation time. This year’s winner – Theo Lopez de Castilla – who showed all of those traits and more and we were very proud to award this year’s trophy to Theo. We were also fortunate enough to have Mike Lanos attend this year’s dinner and personally award the trophy to Theo along with a financial donation.
Karl Wasslen Recognition of Excellence:
Karl Wasslen was also the recipient of an award presented by Coach Sandy Mackie thanking him for his many years of service, devotion, and commitment to the program as goalkeeper coach for the Carleton Varsity Soccer team. Thanks Karl for all of your work with the program and we wish you all of the best in your future endeavours.
Thanks again to all of those who made it out.
Thank you to Sandy for your kind words and presentations.
