We hope that everyone had a great time and great alumni weekend! A big thank you to everyone that participated and especially those who travelled from Toronto, Windsor, Waterloo, Montreal and New York City to be here! We would also like to thank Coach Sandy Mackie for the constant support to the Alumni Association, the Hoefler’s for catering, Mrs. Brauns, Gina, and Lizzy for Volunteering at the Latvian church, and the Executive group for all of the work behind the scenes. Read on for the all the weekend news.

Saturday October 17th: Alumni Weekend.

SuperCup:

It was a cold afternoon on the freshly cut grass at Hornets’ Nest in Ottawa’s East end. Despite the cold weather, the Alumni were eager to get going and had a great turnout with 18 dressed players and a many more on the sidelines to watch the match and chirp both Varsity and Alumni players. The Alumni started off with Mark Krocko in nets and a back four of John Legakis, Stefano Viera, Jay Da Costa, and Jeff Knight (captain).  The midfield was Dan Deganutti, Sam McHugh, Andrew Park, Pano, Joey Kewin and Andrew Latty up front. The Old Boys started off strong and were rewarded with a goal from Andrew Latty with some hard work from Joey Kewin to get Varsity to cough up the ball. Varsity tied it up with a tidy pass from Dante Cobisa to Andrew “Big-Man” Bryan who coolly finished short side on Krocko. Minutes later Varsity scored again from close range making it 2-1 Varsity at half.

Again Alumni started off strong in the second half with guest of honour Mike Zaborski making his presence felt and hitting anything and everything in sight!  Alumni were rewarded with a Penalty and Pano stepped up to try to tie the game – it was a pillow of a pass to the keeper and from there things got worse. Stefano “Ruffles” then played Santa Claus and gifted Alumni with the 3rd that was followed up with Alumni pushing everyone forward leaving Daud to win a 1v1 foot race and easily score the 4th.

Sadly Alumni gave up the SuperCup trophy this year to Varsity.

Super Cup 2015

PK Competition:

With 18 players participating and in typical Carleton fashion after one round we were already down to 8 players!  Round two had us lose another 50% and we were down to four and finally down to two finalised between James Sharif and Gord McDonald.  In the end it was “Wee Gordie“ who won and ended up leaving with the Carleton swag.

BBQ:

We had a great BBQ afterwards with many beverages. If warmer I`m sure we would have stayed much longer but it was a great day and good end to the Super Cup.

Quick Thanks Mike Lanos and the Ottawa Gloucester Hornets Soccer Association for the use of their field and facilities.

Alumni Dinner

We had a great turnout for the alumni dinner and again another big thanks to everyone who helped make it possible. Big thanks to Stevie `The Historian“ Ball for the slide show and the numerous speeches. The food was fantastic as usual and the Varsity boys looked especially stylish thanks to their Carleton Raven Ties. Always great to get together with Alumni from various generations and share stories from the playing days.  Great to meet some of the Varsity boys as well and hopefully they continue the traditions laid before them.

Coach Sandy Mackie presented two OUA All-Star Awards from the previous year to Daud Dahir and Michael Calof – congrats lads!

Following the award presentations was the much anticipated speech from Mike Zaborski. Mike is currently a Principal Architect at MdeAS and flew in from New York to attend this year’s event. Mike was captain of the Raven’s for three seasons and was an All-Canadian in his playing days and remains a massive supporter of the Carleton Men’s Soccer Program.  We want to personally thank Mike for taking the time to attend this year’s event and deliver the keynote address. You can tell that Mike took a lot of time and effort in preparing his 10 page speech as there is a lot of heart and emotion throughout.  Mike`s speech touched on many area`s of his life, his work experiences, experiences before Carleton, time as a rookie, the grey area in between to your final year and to life after Carleton and up until today. Thank you Mike for sharing and we were honoured to have you.

Night out:

Where most of the stories that everyone wants to know what happened but will not be shared here in this form. The boys had a great night out that included Sefic ordering non-stop trays of shots, Zab closing the bar down, not being able to move, a few swings, and a continuation for some until the sun rose = good times. For more detail on the Night Out – Attend next year’s Alumni Weekend!!

Fury Game:

With over 35 free tickets passed out, we had a turnout of 8 Alumni for the game in the bitter cold so shout out to: Alex AZ, Kriss Brauns, Will Murray, Paul McCallum, Alic Edgar, Brain Rogic and Jay Da Costa (the young alumni are soft).  Fury won 1-0 off a beauty of a goal!

A fantastic weekend with many new memories!
